Zoo Weekend volunteers needed, March 12-13
The Montgomery Zoo's annual spring time fundraiser is coming up soon.  In fact the dates for Zoo Weekend are: Saturday and Sunday, March 12-13, 9am - 6pm daily.  In order for the Zoo to have a successful event, we greatly depend on good-hearted and dedicated volunteers.

What do volunteers do during Zoo Weekend?  Good question.  We need volunteers of all sorts.  All volunteers must be at least 13 years old to volunteer.  If you are 13-15 years old, you must have a parent and/or legal guardian volunteer with you.  Available positions include:
-- Helping at the kid's games
     -- Bounce houses and slides
     -- Face painting
     -- Loading/unloading at the train
     -- Loading/unloading at the skylift
     -- Cleaning tables
     -- Picking up trash
-- Helping at the Giraffe Encounter
     -- Monitoring Parakeet Cove
-- Helping at the Pedal Boats
     -- Gift Shop sales tent

Time slots?  During Zoo Weekend, we need approximately 160 volunteers per day.  We have two shifts available:
     -- Morning: 8am - 2pm
     -- Afternoon: 1pm - 6:30pm
If you are interested in working multiple shifts, that is great.  This is great way to earn volunteer hours/credit for school projects or military community hours.

All shifts are provided a lunch and drink.  If you have special dietary needs, please feel free to bring your own.

Where do I sign up?  Please see the link below, and complete the Volunteer application, click submit and a Zoo representative will be contacting you soon to schedule your time at Zoo Weekend.  Thank you in advance, and we can't wait to see you at Zoo Weekend!

Help build a legacy for generations to come by giving
A legacy has been built here at the Montgomery Zoo greatly in part from generous donations from friends and members just like you. Either as a dedication, class project, memorial, unique gift item, or as a holiday year-end gift, your gifts are contributed to the general fund allowing the Montgomery Zoo to continue to expand, develop new exhibits and programs, introduce new rides and animal encounters while continuing to touch the people of the region and outlying communities.

There are multiple ways to contribute to the Montgomery Zoo.

Our goal is simple yet true. We want to create and maintain an environment that is safe and healthy for our guests and animals alike, creating a positive and learning experience for all to enjoy. Won't you join us in building a legacy that will impact today and generations to come?

Help bring Stingray Bay to the Montgomery Zoo
One of our future animal exhibit projects is building a touch and feel stingray exhibit, Stingray Bay.  This exhibit will be an enclosed exhibit with a pool filled with a multitude of free swimming stingray. Guests will be able to enjoy a full animal encounter by observing them as they swim about the tank and interact with each other, guests will be allowed to touch the stingray as well as feed the stingray.

The past few Zoo Weekends and Zoobilations have raised funds to bring this exhibit and this animal experience to the Montgomery Zoo. However, we still need to raise some additional funds in order to move forward and begin construction. If you would like to help by contributing online to this fund and bring stingrays to the Montgomery Zoo, please visit this online giving site.

Also, help spread the news by liking and sharing the Stingray Bay facebook page.

Thank you, and we are grateful for your support and help in bringing stingrays to the Montgomery Zoo.

Congratulations Joseph and Becca, Docent and Zooteen
of the Year!
Tuesday night, January 26, the Montgomery Zoo proudly honored the Education volunteers with a cowboy-themed party and banquet.  Participants enjoyed a campfire-style dinner, awards program and square dancing lessons.  The highlight of this annual event is the announcement of the Docent and Zooteen of the Year.  This year’s recipients are Joseph Massey and Becca Frederick.

Joseph Massey has been a volunteer in the education department since 2004.  He is an environmental science graduate from Auburn University of Montgomery.  Joseph currently volunteers several days a week helping to take care of the animals and maintain exhibits.  He is a level 4 handler which means he is able to handle and work with all the animals in the department.  His favorites are the rats, Chris and Holly.

Becca Frederick is a 14 year old Zooteen who has been with the department since January of 2015.  During this time, she has learned about and tested to handle all the animals through level 2.  Becca is a homeschool student who usually volunteers on Saturdays, but is always willing to come in and help other days of the week if she is needed.  Her favorite animal is Anakin the sugar glider.

Congratulations Joseph and Becca.  And thank you to all of the Zoo's Education volunteers for their countless hours of dedication to the animals of the Montgomery Zoo and the River Region community.

Are you interested in joining the team of wonderful Education volunteers?  We would definitely love to have you join the team.
